About This Trail

Spanning 47 yellow-blazed miles along Iron Mountain’s backbone, this ridgeline route was the original Appalachian Trail before a 1972 relocation to Grayson Highlands. Rocky ridgelines, scenic overlooks, oak forests, and three trail shelters offer a more secluded alternative to the modern AT corridor.

Getting There

From Damascus, take US-58 east approximately 8 miles. Turn left onto Beartree Gap Road (VA-837) and drive 3 miles to Beartree Recreation Area for Iron Mountain Trail access.
