About This Trail

Paralleling Otter Creek for 4.3 miles through George Washington National Forest near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Historical canal-lock exhibits await at the James River Visitor Center trailhead. Narrow sections, easy creek crossings, and cool bridge tunnels define this shaded corridor popular with birders and casual hikers.

Getting There

From Staunton, take VA-252 south to Route 42 south. Turn west onto VA-602 and follow signs to the Sherando Lake Recreation Area. The Otter Creek Trail begins from the recreation area trailhead.
